Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are paper-thin shells of porcelain that your Fair Lakes Family Dentistry provider attaches to the front of your permanent teeth. If you chip a tooth, you might only need one veneer, but the team at Fair Lakes Family Dentistry usually recommends six or eight. That’s because the more veneers you get, the more balanced your smile appears.

What types of issues can veneers hide?

At Fair Lakes Family Dentistry, the team uses veneers to cover minor oral imperfections, including:

  • Broken and chipped teeth
  • Severe discoloration or uneven coloring
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Smaller-than-average teeth

The team might also recommend veneers if you have teeth that are pointy or unusually shaped.

What does getting veneers involve?

At Fair Lakes Family Dentistry, getting veneers takes two appointments.

First veneers visit

If you’re a candidate for veneers, your provider numbs your mouth and removes a thin layer of enamel from each of your teeth. Afterward, they take impressions of your teeth and send your impressions to a dental lab. The lab uses your impressions to manufacture a custom set of dental veneers that fit perfectly.

Second veneers visit

When the lab completes your custom veneers, you return to Fair Lakes Family Dentistry and your provider bonds the veneers to your permanent teeth. Then, they polish your veneers and provide care instructions.

How long do veneers last?

Veneers tend to last 12-15* years, but it’s possible to extend their life by practicing good oral hygiene. The team at Fair Lakes Family Dentistry recommends:

  • Brushing your teeth twice daily
  • Flossing once a day
  • Visiting Fair Lakes Family Dentistry every six months for an oral exam
  • Protecting your veneers with a mouthguard or night guard

It’s also important to avoid bad habits like biting your fingernails or opening plastic packaging with your teeth.

How much do veneers cost?

The cost of veneers varies greatly, depending on the material used and the number of veneers you need. Following an in-office consultation, including an oral exam and a discussion of your treatment goals, the team at Fair Lakes Family Dentistry can provide you with a custom quote.
